This month, MK Dr. Einat Wilf (Independence Faction) introduced legislation to promote Flex Fuel cars in Israel which will increase Israel’s energy independence.
“The legislation is designed to increase the supply of cars in Israel which are not exclusively powered by gasoline by enforcing car importers to gradually increase the proportion of imported cars that can run of flex fuels – a combination of biodiesel, methanol, ethanol and gasoline.
“The purpose of the legislation is to make a symbolic contribution towards undermining the geopolitical value of oil. The sale of oil pays for some of the world’s worst evils, such as Iran’s nuclear program, radical Islam and international terrorism. As long as the world is dependent on oil, it cannot fight effectively against such destructive and destabilizing forces. While Israel itself is a small market that cannot directly influence global demand for oil, Israel can effectively demonstrate what countries around the world can do to limit their dependency on oil.”
The legislation is based on the principals introduced in the research conducted by Dr. Gal Luft and Anne Korin, published in their book ‘Turning Oil Into Salt: Energy Independence Through Fuel Choice’. A similar bill was introduced by U.S. Congressman Eliot Engel and discussed in the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
